Horgans has brought home two awards from this year’s Blas na hÉireann Irish Food Awards in Dingle, with two of its longstanding Irish products recognised by the judges.
The Cork-based food company was awarded Gold for Horgan’s Irish Silverside Spiced Beef, while Horgan’s 1921 Irish Reserve Cheddar received a Bronze award, continuing a proud history of recognition at the annual Blas na hÉireann Irish Food Awards and adding to a milestone year as Horgans celebrates 50 years in business.
The Gold win is particularly fitting for Horgans, with spiced beef having been part of Cork’s food tradition for generations and remaining a firm favourite in households across the county, particularly at Christmas.
Horgan’s Irish Silverside Spiced Beef is made using a Horgan family recipe dating back to 1921. The silverside beef is aged for a minimum of 14 days before being lightly salted and marinated in the family’s secret blend of spices. It is then cooked with a coating of herbs and spices to give it its distinctive aromatic flavour.
Michael Horgan, owner of Horgans, said: “These awards mean a great deal to us because there is so much history behind both products. The spiced beef in particular is something that has been part of our family for generations, with the recipe going right back to 1921. To see it still being enjoyed by families more than 100 years later, and now recognised with a Gold award at Blas na hÉireann, is something we’re incredibly proud of.
“Spiced beef is also such a big part of Christmas in Cork. For many families, including our own, it simply wouldn’t be Christmas without it on the table, so it makes this award all the more special.”
Also recognised at this year’s awards was Horgan’s 1921 Irish Reserve Cheddar, which took home Bronze. A rich, mature cheddar with a creamy texture and slightly sweet, caramelised flavour, its lengthy maturation allows salt crystals to develop naturally, giving the cheese its characteristic bite.
The two awards recognise the quality and tradition behind products that have been part of the Horgan family business for generations.
